Labiaplasty surgery is done in order to reduce the size of the labia minora.Some females have this procedure done due to an overly large labia which causes them embarassment and discomfort. This surgery can be done as an outpatient.
Before you are due to have your surgery, you will be instructed to follow some strict instructions not to eat or drink anything at least eight hours before the procedure. You would also be given some special cream that has an anesthetic in it. It will also be strongly advised to not smoke before your procedure for at least a couple of weeks. It is also strongly suggested to not drink alcoholic beverages before the procedure.
Medicines that have a blood thinning effect such as aspirins, or any other nonsteroidal medicines will have to be stopped as well. So anything that oncreases the risk of bleeding out during surgery will need to be stopped for a couple weeks prior to the procedure. It is also important to abstain from having sexual intercourse before the surgery.
There are some risks associated with labiaplasty surgery and you need to have a complete understanding of this beforehand. The risks are, (1) loss of sexual feelings in that area, (2) infections, (3) a lot of bleeding, (4) a lot of scar tissue build-up, (5) numbness in the vaginal area, (6) a lot of pain there, and (7) a break in blood vessels causing a blood clot.
Before the procedure takes place, you’ll be given a general anesthesia. During the operation, parts of the labia that are not totally even are cut and made shorter. A specialized pair of scissors is used for that. If the labia is actually so large as to stick way out from the vaginal area, then liposuction will be done. Exposing the clitoris, commonly known as a hoodectomy will be done too, since the clitoris is what causes many of the sexual feelings.
The incisions you will get all depend upon the individual female and size of the labia, how out of shape the area is, and the texture. When the incisions and re-shaping is done, then the area will be stitched with dissolvable stitches.
The recovery period does take time, about eight weeks. You will have bleeding after the procedure, and must stay away from any sexual intercourse for that time period. The area there is very fragile and tender after. You’ll need to wear a pad for a few days after, and whatever you do, never insert tampons there. It is also important not to over-exercise during that time period. Taking a gentle stroll is usually okay.
