The Chicken, the Egg, and the Genesis connection
For centuries, people have debated and wondered about the age-old question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
British researchers cracked the mystery recently at Sheffield and Warwick universities according to a newspaper called the “Daily Mail.” They described their findings in a paper called the “Structural Control of Crystal Nuclei by an Eggshell Protein.”
They identified a protein called ovocledidin-17 (OC-17) in eggs, a substance that only forms in the ovaries of chickens. This protein is essential to the development of a hard shell, aiding crystallization by converting calcium carbonate into calcite crystals that harden the shell and make it develop faster.
Thus, it protects the yolk and surrounding fluids necessary to the growth of the chick inside the egg, the report said. The scientists used a super computer to hone in on the development of the egg and the chick within the egg. They realized the protein held the key to the development of the egg and the protection of the chick.
Dr. Colin Freeman of the University‘s Engineering Department told the “Daily Mail” that “It had long been suspected that the egg came first but now we have the scientific proof that shows that in fact the chicken came first,” according to , from Sheffield University’s Department of Engineering Materials.
Dr Freeman also said, “It’s very interesting to find that different types of avian species seem to have a variation of the protein that does the same job.”
This information helps to verify the Genesis account of God creating the living things on the earth.
Genesis 2 verse 20 states: “And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 “And God created great whales and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 “And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 “And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.” Quotes from King James Bible
This tells us that on the fifth day of the Genesis account of creation, God made the chicken and told it to be fruitful and multiply. Therefore, the chicken created the egg, proving what any Bible believer knows, and has always known, that the chicken clearly came before the egg. Although they need no proof, the findings of the scientific investigation make the knowledge even sweeter.
