Worry can be a troublesome and relentless foe. Most of the things on which we spend our precious time and energy worrying ceaselessly over will never come to pass. Unfortunately, we all too often waste a good portion of our lives engaged in a useless activity which does not serve us in a positive manner. Thankfully, however, there is a way out of the habit and bondage of excessive worry. Following a few daily steps can move us forward into positive thinking and away from debilitating worry.
-Meditation
The practice of meditating during the times in which we find ourselves entrapped in worry can be an immense help in centering ourselves and focusing on the positive aspects of our lives. It is also a wonderful way to put worry in perspective and in it’s proper place. Further, we are given the opportunity to go within ourselves, and in the process of doing so, possibly find the answers to our concerns and problems.
-Talking with others
Sharing our worries with understanding and non-judgmental individuals, such as family, friends, a counselor, or a clergy member, can rapidly cause us to feel better about whatever it is in life that may be weighing heavily on our minds and hearts. We often discover that others are able to relate to and help us because they have also been through similar experiences. This, in turn, can enable us to not feel so alone and isolated in our worries.
-Daily affirmations
The habit of positive self-talk through daily affirmations is yet another way of removing unnecessary worry. Excessive worry can sometimes be exacerbated by focusing extensively on the negative aspects of our lives. Practicing positive affirmations directly related to ourselves and the issues concerning us may enable us to see our worries in a different light.
-Spend time on enjoyable activities
There are times when the best thing we can do is to focus our attention and energy elsewhere, such as in activities we enjoy. Reading, writing, listening to music, watching a movie, or exercise all offer a temporary, yet much needed, escape from worry. A break from our stresses and strains ensures that, when we return to the reality of dealing with them, we do so refreshed, renewed, and in a better state of mind.
Worry is indeed an inevitable part of being human. It is necessary to address our problems and disturbances as they arise, but we should not permit worry to paralyze us. Rather, the use of healthy alternatives to ease or even erase worry is the best course of action for attaining peace of mind.
