Introverts are people who often want to be alone, and they usually come across as quiet people. Unfortunately, as introverts make up only a small percent of the population, they, along with most other minorities, are misunderstood. People come up with their own assumptions about introverts, the majority of which are not true.
There are several different myths about introverts. The most commonly believed one is that introverts are shy people, when in fact, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Shyness is a fear of being socially judged, but introversion is more like reservedness. Introverts aren’t quiet because they’re scared of other people’s judgment; they just don’t interact with people unless they see a point behind it. If you start talking to an introvert about something that they actually have an interest in, then you’ve got yourself a legit conversation going.
Another common but false assumption about introverts is that they don’t like people. Introverts, just like anyone else, will not like every single person they meet; they are also not the type of people that have hundreds of friends. However, they do develop few, strong friendships, and introverts are the type of people you want as your friends, cause they’ll have your back no matter what happens.
People also often think that introverts want to be by themselves all the time. Introverts aren’t weird aliens from another planet; they, just like all other human beings, need social interaction in order to stay sane. Introverts just like being alone to think and daydream a little more than the rest of society. They still have to talk to people, although introverts don’t prefer interacting with more than one person at a time.
Another myth about introverts is that they are weird and “different.” Well, they obviously are different, but not in the sense that most people think, and they are definitely not weird. Introverts aren’t followers, and often go against what society feels is normal. But just because someone isn’t following the latest trend, it doesn’t mean that they are “uncool”- it just means that introverts are unique and know how to think outside the box.
Finally, people believe that introverts don’t know how to have fun. The truth is actually that introverts are more comfortable relaxing at home or in nature, and that their idea of fun just doesn’t involve much risk or thrill. They grasp ideas and experiences a lot faster than most people, so they don’t need to be out and about “doing stuff” as much as others.
Introverts are often misunderstood, but their intellect and intelligence is what makes them so special. They are gifted people who often grow up to do great things (as in singers, artists, authors, philosophers etc.), so if you think you might be an introvert or you know someone who is, then know that you’re blessed with something that a lot of people don’t have . . . so embrace it.
