Crying is a very personal emotion. Some people are more sensitive than others and may respond to sensitive matters by crying. The reasons for crying are as diverse as the people who cry. Unfortunately, some members of society have decided it’s more appropriate for women and children to cry more so than men. So, why does it seem that some people cry more than others?
Let’s examine this issue of sensitivity more closely. What sensitive issues illicit an emotional response from a majority of females? It’s safe to say, females might respond with tears if a child is hurt or injured. Some might speculate that women cry more than men. Does this mean that women are more compassionate or just more sensitive to matters concerning children?
Hormonal changes in women may cause them to have crying spells at times. There are a host of maladies that may cause women to cry. PMS is also known to cause some women to be more sensitive to matters that normally would not make another person cry. Depression or feeling sad and blue may cause someone to be more sensitive than others.
Babies cry because it’s the only way they have of communicating boredom, discomfort, hunger or a wet diaper. In the same vein, senior adults may cry under similar circumstances. A disabled, elderly adult may cry also under these similar circumstances because they may not have a way of conveying their emotions.
In any event, it’s difficult to discern what sensitive matters might elicit crying in some people. Some people cry at weddings because of the sentimentality of witnessing their daughter or son start a new life. Some people cry at births because it’s painful and a new life is brought into this world.
Sentimentality is a huge factor in the reason why people cry. Crying is often a response of helplessness, frustration and bewilderment. The landscape of our society have all experienced these sentiments at one time or another. We can assume that people handle emotional situations depending upon their influences and support system.
For instance, a grandfather that seems strong and unflappable is reduced to tears after his life long companion, a dog, is hit by a car. That devastating event caught the stoic grandfather off guard. Up until that point, his grand children had never seen him cry. Hence, it’s safe to say that everyone has sensitivities to issues that might make them cry.
