Make and use Candy Glass

Movies make it look so dangerous. The bad guy flies through the window, gets up and brushes himself off. This seemingly dangerous feat is made safer by the fact that movie sets of old used candy glass in place of regular glass for windows when directors filmed a fight or escape scene. Make your own bad guy movies or fake stained glass by creating your own candy glass. You won’t believe how easy it is to do and you can buy all of the ingredients at the grocery store!

Line a cookie pan with smooth aluminum foil. Work out any creases that will affect the appearance of clear glass. Spray the aluminum foil with a light coat of spray oil. When the candy glass is done, removal will be easy.

Mix four cups of granulated sugar with one cup of water in a medium sauce pan. Add one and three-fourths cup of corn syrup. Heat over a medium heat, stirring constantly to dissolve all of the sugar. If you plan to use the candy glass as a prop, add one teaspoon of salt to give it a more realistic appearance. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn up the heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Scrape the sugar crystals off the edge of the pan as the mixture continues to boil. Check the temperature with a candy thermometer. When it reaches 290 degrees Fahrenheit, just before the hard crack stage, remove the pan from the stove and stir in one tablespoon flavoring extract.

Pour the candy into the pan you prepared early. Smooth it out around the pan, making certain it reaches all the edges of the pan and is not too thick in any given area. Let it set and cool. Once the candy glass is cooled, you can break it up and eat it or use it to create part of your own home movie set.

Stained glass is a little different. Divide the ingredients in half and make two small sauce pans of the sugary mixture. After the candy reaches 290 degrees Fahrenheit and you have added the flavoring extract, add different colors of food coloring to each pan. Quickly and carefully pour them into the prepared cookie sheet, one section at a time. Keep the second pan on the stove, but off, while you pour the first pan. With a steady hand, you should be able to form different colored sections for a stained glass window affect.

Once you have completed your candy glass, you can use it other ways too. Create beautiful windows for gingerbread houses. Work on your skills and your candy glass can be blown like real glass to create bowls and cups. Keep in mind, however, that the glass will melt if it gets too warm. It will also attract insects pests so plan on using your creation for a limited time and keep it in a cool space.

Simple to make. Easy to break. Make your own candy glass and have a lot of fun!
