The winters in Louisiana are mild and short. The lowest temperature that was ever recorded here was -16 degrees in the year of 1899. The highest temperature that was ever recorded here was 114 degrees in the year of 1936. Louisiana is about 380 miles long and 130 miles wide.
The state is bordered by three states, Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas. The lowest point of Louisiana is New Orleans at eight feet below sea level. The water here in Louisiana is a lot of streams, lakes rivers, canals, creeks, wetlands, swamps, and marshes. The boating and fishing here is big. Louisiana has five major rivers and they are the Mississippi River, Sabine River, Red River, Atchafalya River, and Ouachita River. Louisiana also has seven major lakes and they are White Lake, Toledo Bend, Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Grand Lake, Catahoula Lake, and Calcasieu Lake.
Near the coast of Louisiana are many salt domes and the salt is mined. All states in the United States are divided into counties, but Louisiana is divided into parishes. Louisiana has 19 state parks and 16 state historic sites. We have a very rich heritage of French, Creole, and Cajun. Life here is a bit on the spicy side. The flavor of the south can be found in many Louisiana dishes, tobasco, crawfish, gumbo, andouille, and etouffees. In Louisiana we have several unique dialects of French, Creole, and English that are spoken.
The three major religions of Louisiana are the Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, and United Methodist. Our music here is also unique, Cajun music, Creole music, Swamp blues, Swamp pop, and Zydeco. New Orleans blues music, and Jazz are popular in New Orleans. The fiddle was a popular Cajun musical instrument. Louisiana is known for the biggest street party in the world, Mardi Gras, in New Orleans Loisiana. The state capitol of Louisiana is located in Baton Rouge.
