The Smaragdine Table of Hermes Trismegistus
Yes, the Science is certainly overlooking paranormal phenomena. The reason is that these phenomena are not facts of common experience. They are, on the contrary, quite uncommon. However the basis of Science is provided by the common experience. There are today here and there voices advocating scientific explanations for some paranormal situations, but they are quite unconvincing. Indeed, as a consequence of overlooking of the paranormal phenomena along the time, the Science took an irreversible turn, such that it cannot provide today credible models for those phenomena.
A personal note: I consider myself lucky enough to experience such a paranormal phenomenon, the story of which is worth revealing. It was a typical space transcendence of a “field” that healed me. Here is the story.
Almost everybody knows how painful the lower back can be at times: in climaxing situations, the spasms, cramps and the position of the body can lead to unbearable pains! Such was my situation about a decade ago, when I appealed to the services of a person who proved that can read the status of all organs of my body from a distance of 5000 miles. The pain was so violent that I had to lie in bed sideways, like a pretzel. Every move, no matter how faint and involuntary, would lead to spasms and cramps. I had pains before and ever since, but “normal” so to speak, supportable. I guess they are inevitable, as long as we don’t pay due attention to our diet and moves, mostly after a certain age, when the bones start to decay physically. And boy, have I abused this body!
But, let me get on with the story. I always was aware of the fact that the scientific explanation of phenomena simply omits something essential. In time I succeeded in making up a plausible explanation where some “fields” of unknown origin entered the stage. So I decided to do some experiments, and I appealed to the cheapest ones: those with my body! I found someone that could read and heal, even from a distance, affections of internal organs, sometimes even radical healing. First I asked for some “preliminary readings” so to speak. I had thorough results of my physical examinations, in order to be compared. I sent a picture (this is how it works, the person concentrates on your image) and at a certain time I laid down in bed for 10 minutes with hands and legs apart, in order to be “seen”. The results were amazing: not only the medical results were thoroughly confirmed, but I found some other things I had to correct in my attitude towards my body. This is why, for instance, I don’t use sugar anymore: only honey!
This was the situation when I got the big crisis of back pain. One or two days I went on regular pain killers, but the situation worsened instead of improving. So, I stopped taking pills, deciding to suffer until the body would be able to heal by itself, the natural way. Good intention but, unfortunately, unrealizable as it seemed at the time. For, almost a month has passed with no improvement; on the contrary! Then I started thinking: what if? Well, I was hesitant to say the least: it is one to see a body, which is a passive act of reception, and something else to act upon its parts! At that moment in my life I resolved that, indeed, there should be a field of each and every organ in the human body. The fact that I was diagnosed so thoroughly from a distance plainly proved it to me. Moreover, I concluded that these fields transcend the Space and Matter as they appear to our intuition. But I had no clue as to their “intensity” so to speak.
Finally I called, nothing to loose! For a week or so I assumed the convenient position (very hard to assume indeed in that situation!) with limbs apart, at a certain hour for ten minutes every day, when the remote healer concentrated upon my spine. Miracle! The very next day it was a little easier to get into that position. On the third or fourth day I was cured, but I learned my lesson and I continued to stay for the whole week as prescribed and agreed. From that moment no back pain of such violence has ever come upon me. Of course I have back pains, but they are, as I said, “normal”.
Now, this is something to think about: it is a personal experience, and nobody can share it like, for instance, the fact that in order to crush a stone we need a hammer. But having this experience the next step would be to find the place where fields of that nature might hide from the common observation. We don’t mind sharing an opinion or two on this subject, starting from the analysis of the very basis of Modern Science.
It is well known that Newton was led to the inference of the force of gravitation inversely proportional with the distance between the Sun and the planets, by accepting the Copernican system of the World (easily found in the www). When this force is analyzed according to the laws of Classical Dynamics expressed by Newton himself, the trajectory of a planet comes out as an ellipse, exactly as the Kepler laws show (see the subject in the www). This means that while, in deducing this force, we have to assume that the force attracting the planet acts directly towards the center of motion, when describing the motion under its influence we discover that the center of motion and the center of attraction are different! This fact was considered, even starting with Newton, as a flaw of the theory and, in time, different attitudes have been adopted, culminating with the theory of General Relativity. We see otherwise.
Namely, inside the central body, in our case the Sun, there is a region containing both the center of force and the center of the motion, whose dimensions are quantified by the eccentricity of the planet’s orbit. This region, revealed by the mathematical description of the planet around the Sun, evolves according to some conservation laws, and behaves as a source of energy. Now, because describing the motion of the Sun with respect to the planet can mathematically be made in exactly the same terms as the motion of the planet around Sun, we can equally say that there is a region inside the planet, specifically the Earth, behaving as a source of energy. From the same point of view, the motion of the Moon around Earth cam be described as a Kepler motion, therefore there is an energetic region inside Earth governed by the Moon motion. The Science does not mention anything about such things, but they might fit into some esoteric philosophy, represented by the Emerald Tablet of Hermes.
Mary Anne Atwood translates this ancient document, from Latin version of Arabic and Greek copies, in the following form (A Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery, Arno Press, New York 1976, pp. 7-8; we paragraphed the transcription for our later convenience):
True, without error, certain and most true;
That which is above is as that which is below, and that which is below is as that which is above, for performing the miracles of one thing;
And as all things were from one, by the mediation of one, so all things arose from this one thing by adaptation;
The father of it is the Sun, the mother of it is the Moon; the wind carries it in its belly; the nurse thereof is the Earth. This is the father of all perfection, or consummation of the whole world. The power of it is integral if it be turned into earth.
Thou shalt separate the earth from fire, the subtle from the gross, gently with much sagacity; it ascends from earth to heaven, and again descends to earth: and receives the strength of the superiors and of the inferiors so thou hast the glory of the whole world; therefore let all obscurity flee before thee.
This is the strong fortitude of all fortitudes, overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing. So the world was created. Hence were all the wonderful adaptations of which this is the manner.
Therefore am I called Thrice Great Hermes, having the Three Parts of the philosophy of the whole world. That which I have written is consummated concerning the operation of the Sun.
We heard for the first time about the Emerald Tablet when reading N. F. Zhirov’s Atlantida (Mysl’ editions, Moscow 1964), a book well known in the realm of Russian influence of the epoch. This work analyzes, among other ideas, the esoteric idea that the whole Atlantean wisdom has been passed to Egyptians through the god Thot, who is identified with the Greek Hermes Trismegistus. The essentials of this wisdom are represented by the Emerald Tablet, quoted by Zhirov from a French version by Henry Bac (Atlantia, number 195, pp. 79-82, Paris 1959). In broad lines, Bac’s version which, we must say, is the French version of an anonymous Russian author, coincides with our excerpt above, and is interpreted in the light of the contemporary knowledge regarding the internal forces of the matter.
For what we want to say here, is important to mention that the great Newton was concerned about this document, and even has a translation of it that can be easily found by conveniently browsing the www. It is our contention that this document has everything to do with the essence of the fundamental construction of the world, of which Newton has only revealed a superficial part, by his description of the gravity as a force. Deeper yet, by taking Newton’s theory of gravitation as a reference, we might be able to understand the Emerald Table, and this is what we try to explain here.
The starting point of the speculations is that the Emerald Tablet actually represents the Atlantean wisdom as transferred to Egyptians. Now, what we know best about the Egyptians is the fact that they constructed pyramids, apparently for connection with the cosmic background, which could be accomplished only through their kings. In our opinion, a pyramid can represent a mean to “separate the earth from fire, the subtle from the gross, gently with much sagacity”. Well, not in the today’s form and construction material, but remember that Plato mentions the legendary oricalchum of which we know nothing today, and that Herodotus mentions the pyramids as shining red and being smooth. This element might be “the father of all perfection, or consummation of the whole world” which was “turned into earth” in the process of liberating its power. For, “The power of it is integral if it be turned into earth”.
Two things are to be noticed in the Emerald Tablet, that can be connected with the modern Science, Newtonian as well as post – Newtonian. First of all we have a thing from which all the other arose, whose origin is thus characterized: “The father of it is the Sun, the mother of it is the Moon; the wind carries it in its belly; the nurse thereof is the Earth.” This puts us in direct relation with the Newtonian theory of gravitation as sketched above. There is a region inside Earth created by the Sun as above and, likewise, one created by the Moon. Apparently these regions are the same, only the action of the Sun (“the father”) is different from the action of the Moon (“the mother”). Apparently this thing (oricalchum?) is different from earth, for the Earth is only its “nurse” and the “wind carries it”.
Another thing which we might be able to explain within the framework of post-Newtonian physics is that “This is the strong fortitude of all fortitudes, overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing.” Considerations of the strength of materials show that, what penetrates the solid things and overcomes the subtle things can, for once, be described by a tensor having the structure of the electromagnetic field in Maxwell acceptance. This might explain the phrase “all obscurity flees before thee”. However, theoretically “overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing” is by no means limited to the electromagnetic field which, by the way, is only an incomplete representation due to our restricted geometrical possibilities.
In fundamental problems, such as that of the future of humanity, the esoteric wisdom should be taken cum grano salis. This doesn’t mean that the Science itself has to be taken without reserves. There might not be, indeed, difference between them, as one is, unfortunately too often inclined to believe or prove. For, the ancestral memory is so deep that it may direct our very speculative thinking. The Emerald Tablet is, in our opinion an explicit statement reflecting this ancestral memory. And we never cease to ask ourselves if, from this point of view, utterance “the wind carries it in its belly” doesn’t point out towards the modern phenomena of UFO, crop circles and such.
