Is it better to hold back your feelings, or just starting crying when you are hurt. This is an interesting question because while one reaction certainly is easier, it isn’t necessarily the best option. Meanwhile, the other option is harder, but it could be the only option that you have. It all depends on the situation that you are in, and where you are feeling these emotions. While it isn’t always a bad thing to cry, there is also something to be said for being able to take a hit and keep on going.
When you are little, you tend to cry a lot about little things. If you don’t get your cookies, or if you skin a knee, chances are some tears will be forthcoming. However, once you reach a certain age it is taught that you don’t cry, and that crying shows weakness. As we mature, we realize that sometimes crying doesn’t even get us anywhere anyway, and that we just need to suck it up. How far does that rule go though? At what point do we benefit from crying, as opposed to just holding it all in.
If you hold in too much, you will explode. Chances are that you will be on the news as the top story, where the police have found you hanging from a ceiling fan. However, if you cry, you might be seen as weak, and immature. The trick is showing the right emotion to the right people, and keeping your cool until you can finally find a place where you can cry. If a co-worker says something, or if you get a bad review at work, you fight feel really horrible. You can’t cry though, because you will be seen as incapable of taking bad news.
There are some times where crying is acceptable, and it depends on who you are. Typically women get away with crying more than men do. While women aren’t really supposed to cry in front of people anymore, it is more acceptable if it happens. Men are supposed to just take it, and that being a man means controlling your emotions. This isn’t healthy, and everyone should be allowed to cry, although I do find it curious when a man cries.
My belief is that crying should be done in private, and not in public. This is because if you start crying you can cause a scene. People get distracted, and you are the focus of attention. Unless your dad died, or you just found out you have six weeks to live, I don’t care about your dramas. Not to be harsh, but I have my own problems, and I don’t need to worry about yours. The world is dramatic enough, and it seems people make stuff up just for attention.
Crying is an acceptable way of venting your frustrations. Crying can relieve stress, and it can help you get over the problems that you are having. Holding in all your emotions will not lead in a healthy lifestyle, and should be avoided. However, if you choose to cry, please do so in private, and when you are with your friends. Otherwise just suck it up until the end of the day.
