The answer to this question is pretty simple actually – it is far better to let the tears come out when they want to; as opposed to holding everything inside and waiting for it to explode later.
Scientifically, crying actually helps us. What it is essentially doing is releasing chemicals called endorphines. Endorphines are chemicals that are riled up in moments of high emotion – be it happiness, sadness, fear, anger, etc. So, essentially, you are getting rid of stuff that your body doesn’t need anyway.
I will tell you, being a guy, that I lived most of my life believing that, as a guy, I shouldn’t cry. I know the song by Frankie Valli says that Big Girls Don’t Cry; well, I sort of believed it the other way, Big Boys Don’t Cry.
I have met my share of people who would no sooner cry than jump off a bridge. It’s like they’ve never shed a tear in their life. To be honest, sometimes, people with those “nothing can touch me” kind of attitudes, are a bit of a turn off.
What a lie that is.
The fact of the matter is, I came to a point in my life where I just started letting my emotions out. Understand, that I can control my emotions, but when the tears want to come out, I let them come out.
Honestly, once I started letting myself do that, I started feeling better. Believe me, I still have a lot of work left to do, but I try not to hold things in anymore. It just doesn’t do any good to keep all that stuff bottled up inside; and run the risk at dumping it in a negative way on some innocent bystander somewhere down the road.
If you don’t believe any of that, consider crying as a great release. Sometimes, it just feels good. Funny thing, just the other night, for whatever reason, I just started crying – for virtually no reason.
Well, there probably was, but I’ve been under a ton of stress lately, and it felt good after it was all over. And, I am pretty sure that you will feel the same way. You feel as if something heavy has been lifted.
You feel better. You look better. And, you can go about the rest of your day.
So, in short, don’t hold it back. Like Kleenex says in their newest ad campaign, “Just Let it Out.”
