The Danube River is the second largest river in Europe. This river is an international waterway. The Danube River empties into the Black Sea. This river flows through the borders of ten countries and they are Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Huingary, Austria, Germany and Slovakia. The river is navigable by ocean ships. The Danube Delta wetlands support a variety of migratory birds. This river is also a source of drinking water for about ten million people. Since the Middle Ages, fishing from the Danube has declined. A few fishermen are still active along certain parts of the river today.
The Danube River attracts quite a few tourists. There is a bicycle trail along the river that is called Danube Bike Trail and it is divided into four sections that run for many, many miles. There are many national and historic parks that run along this river as well. The Danube River has attracted a lot of artists, musicians, writers and film makers. The Danube River has a long history and many farmers use to come to this river to sing spiritual songs. This river has been a major trade route since the Middle Ages. Traffic can flow between the North and Black Sea by use of the Danube River. The Danube River flows for almost 2000 miles. Many parts of this river today still reflect ancient times. Additional navigavble links from the Black Sea are still being built connectiong to the river today. This will allow for more transporting of goods and services nationally and internationally.
The lower part of the Danube River has a slow, deep, wide course. Some parts of the Danube River are really polluted and is not used for drinking water because it is too hard to clean, but in areas where the water is much much cleaner it is used to supply drinking water. There are many environmental concerns raising about the river today and it is slowing the production of new waterways for transport systems. In Bulgaria, this river is home to a nature reserve. This river is spoken of in quite a few books. The Danube Delta is rich in flora, fauna, and rare species. Over one million swans and ducks can be found along the Danube. Small groves of willow trees can still be found in some areas. The river is a very important balance of the ecosystem and balance of nature to the areas it serves.
