We are caught in a situation of global depletion of safe water by the circumstance of our collective actions. Our rivers, lakes and oceans have been contaminated by municipal, agricultural and industrial activities. Our own immediate water sources have also been affected deriving from neglect of basic sanitation standards. Our domestic suplies is been subjected to enourmous waste. Today, about 1.5 billion people have no access to clean water. The only panacea towards resolving the crises of water pollution lies in our understanding of the implications of our daily actions and working hard to become part of the solutions.
Common accessements places the prevalence of safe water contamination in the third world were poverty and underdevelopment strives. The situations in developed economies have recently assumed a threatening dimension created by contaminated industrial sites, oil exploration and poisoned waterway. We are all architects of our misfortune. When we waste the application of domestic water supply, we contribute to depletion of drinking water. When we leave refuse dumps, human Feces, fertilized soil water flows, human sewage, and run-off from livestock feedlots and pastures unattended, we contribute to contamination of global fresh water. A little waste here and there, a little contamination here and there bears cumulative potentials of global reduction in availability of drinking water and concequently disrupts life on our planet to a great extent. Contamination of water sources accounts for 3.5 million deaths annually.
The problem must not be left for Government alone. We must not wait for Government regulations, budgetary allocations and International organizations to monitor and restrict water pollution. Efforts to ensure worldwide availability of drinking water should start from within. We must learn to turn-off our domestic water systems when not in use. We must educate ourselves to become familiar with the distinction between our domestic refuse disposal medium and our water ways. We must make provision for adequate refuse disposal in our homes by providing for dustbins. In our varied subsistence agricultural endeavors, we must not allow livestock waste and fertilizer wash-offs to empty into our water sources. In our surroundings, we must help the conservative efforts to prevent soil erosion by encouraging tree preservation and planting.
From a holistic perspective, there is need for a global concerted effort towards water protection. Nations of the world share a common destiny. Let’s learn to show solidarity with the cause of Civil society groups and International organizations in the quest to raise public attention to our environmental challenges. Fundamentally, we must learn to guide our surrounding religiously, knowing that a little contamination to any drop of water reduces global availability of drinking water
