How to Protect yourself during an Earthquake

A person should always know how to survive any natural disaster. People who live in California are especially prone to earthquakes. Earthquakes are often devastating to many towns and cites. It can be difficult to rebuild the whole community after one of these nasty earthquakes hit. The important thing is to know how to survive the earthquake so that a person can help rebuild their community. Many schools are now going over disaster drills and many people are now watching for any signs of earthquakes so that people have more time to prepare

Many people are not aware but once an earthquake hits, a person should duck under anything sturdy and safe such as a table or a kitchen cabinet. A person should never hide under something that is unstable such as a bookcase or a rocking chair. The proper measure for protecting one’s head is to place the arms over their head because cracked arm bones are easier to fix than a cracked skull. Many California schools have this drill at least twice during the seasons for earthquakes. This is because they want everyone to be safe in the event of an earthquake. This also lets the parents feel safe because they know their children are in safe hands.

Always get into an open field or a flat surface away form falling objects, if in a car. This is important so that the car does not crush the people inside. Always protect the head and neck with a person’s arms and stay away from a cracks in the ground. Otherwise, the person can inflict body harm on himself or herself or death by being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

If a person is in a supermarket, then they should move away into an open area such as the bakery or the fruit and veggie aisle. This area has less chance of any objects falling onto the person and less chance of any debris cutting or injuring them.

If the earthquake happens and the person cannot get to a safe area, then pulling something over them is a very good idea. An object that cannot break easily should be pulled over the person’s head and body in order to project themselves from falling derbies or objects. This will lessen injury by 50 percent. An earthquake is survivable if someone is well aware of what need to be done in order to survive. Taking safety classes can sometimes be helpful in the event of an earthquake.
