What Herbs Are Beneficial for Liver & Kidneys?

Many different herbs are used medicinally to support the liver and kidneys, some of which have preventive effects while others have treatment or curative benefits. Certain Chinese traditional herbs are used in protecting the liver from harmful toxins, and many rather common medicinal herbs can help both the liver and kidneys in a wide variety of ways.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has many benefits for both the liver and kidneys, including supporting detoxification of the blood and improving liver function, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Several scientific studies “suggest that a substance in milk thistle (silymarin) can protect the liver from damage caused by viruses, toxins, alcohol and certain drugs such as acetaminophen,” the UMMC says. The milk thistle seed extract can also help to prevent or treat kidney stones. The UMMC recommends a dose of 80 to 160 mg of milk thistle seed extract taken two to three times daily for support of detoxification.

Bupleurum

The root of the Chinese herb Bupleurum (Bupleurum falcatum) contains saikosides, which are saponin-like substances that strengthen liver function while protecting the liver from toxins, according to the Herb Growing & Marketing Network. Bupleurum has an anti-inflammatory effect and can reduce the risk of liver cancer in people with cirrhosis, according to a study cited by the UMMC.

Licorice Root

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is used to treat and prevent a wide range of illnesses, particularly for liver disease, the UMMC notes. Medical researchers in Japan propose that taking licorice root’s active component glycyrrhizin with cysteine and glycerine may reduce the risk of cirrhosis in patients with hepatitis C. The UMMC points out, however, that the researchers delivered the formula intravenously, so the effects of taking licorice root orally is unknown. The dried root is also used to treat urinary irritations, acting as an anti-inflammatory and diuretic, says the Herb Growing & Marketing Network.

Cordyceps

A mushroom used in traditional Chinese medicine, Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) is used to support the liver, the UMMC says. The UMMC recommends taking 3 to 4 ½ grams of the mushroom twice each day to improve liver and immune system function.

Cranberry

The use of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is common throughout the world for treating urinary tract and kidney infections as well as kidney stones. To support kidney health, the UMMC advises a 300 to 400 mg daily dose of cranberry extract or consuming 8 to 16 ounces of unsweetened cranberry juice each day.
