How to Stop Hair From Growing Back After Shaving

Overview

To permanently stop hair from regrowing after shaving, you must destroy the hair follicles. Electrolysis and laser removal methods destroy hair follicles and can, with repeated treatments, significantly reduce the amount of hair growing in a given area. You can slow the regrowth of hair by removing it from as deep within the follicle as possible. You can use several tools to accomplish the removal of hairs from their roots, but they will eventually grow back.

Step 1

Consult a specialist to determine if you are a good candidate for laser hair removal or electrolysis treatments. The treatments can be costly, side effects may occur and it may take several sessions to achieve the desired results. In the meantime, there are other things you can do to reduce hair regrowth.

Step 2

Apply a depilatory cream to your skin after shaving. You typically leave a depilatory on for 10 minutes or less; see the instructions for the specific cream you purchase. Depilatories are alkaline chemicals that essentially dissolve hair. They do not destroy the follicle or even dissolve the hair down to the root, so hair will eventually grow back in the treated area.

Step 3

Wax the area. Hair removal via waxing involves applying a layer of warm wax to an area of skin and covering it with a piece of cloth. Allow the wax to cool and harden. Remove the layer of wax by quickly pulling the cloth away from the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. Hair removed this way comes out by the root and will take much longer to regrow.
