How to Remove Sediment From Hair

Overview

Water that we use in our homes can contain copper, magnesium, and calcium, which can build up in our hair and cause it to become dull and fall limp. Sediments in the hair may have damaging effects besides being an aggravation. Daily shampooing is okay, however some shampoos and conditioners do not deliver desired results when sediment is present in your water and hair. Follow simple daily hair care routines to eliminate sediment build up and restore shine and volume to lack luster hair.

Step 1

Install a water filtration system in your home. Make sure that you filter water from all sources such as the bathtubs, bathroom faucets, and kitchen sink. This will trap sediment in a filter, stop it from reaching your hair, and therefore help get prevent sediment build up by providing fresher water to the hair during cleansing.

Step 2

Shampoo your hair daily with a clarifying shampoo. These shampoos are designed to remove the build up of minerals and hair styling products by thoroughly cleansing the hair follicles and breaking down deposits on the hair shaft and scalp. For dry hair, cleanse every other day instead of every day in order to maintain moisture balance.

Step 3

Add a tsp. of baking soda to your shampoo to enhance its build up removal capabilities. Baking soda acts as a gentle exfoliant for the hair and scalp. Massage baking soda/shampoo mixture into the scalp for up to 5 minutes to loosen sediment. Make sure you thoroughly rinse the hair to remove granules of baking soda once you are finished cleansing.

Step 4

Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar once a week. Apple cider vinegar breaks down sediment deposits and deep cleans your scalp and hair shaft. It is also good for removing excess sebum and dead skin cells from the hair follicles.
