About Purell Hand Sanitizer

Overview

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, hand sanitizers with a base of at least 60 percent alcohol are an effective aid for keeping your hands clean. While alcohol-based hand sanitizers aren’t appropriate for all hand washing needs, the New York health agency advocates using them if your hands aren’t visible dirty; after sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose; and before and after coming into contact with someone who is sick.

Types

Purell instant hand sanitizer is available in two types: A 65-percent ethyl alcohol antiseptic solution and a solution with the same alcohol content, plus added aloe and vitamin E. The manufacturer says both products kill 99.99 percent of common germs, although the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) says that because hand sanitizer manufacturers test their products on inanimate surfaces, instead of human hands, these claims may not be accurate.

Considerations

According to the Wisconsin DHS, hand sanitizers don’t take the place of proper hand washing. They don’t remove dirt or other organic materials. On the other hand, the DHS notes that, when combined with proper hand-washing procedures, hand sanitizers can reduce the number of bacteria and viruses on your hands.

Directions

The same directions apply to both varieties of Purell hand sanitizer: Squeeze enough sanitizer into your hands to wet them thoroughly, then rub your hands briskly until they’re dry. Always supervise children as they use Purell.

Warning

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, you should always keep hand sanitizer out of the reach of children, and never use hand sanitizer on children younger than 2 years old. Never swallow the hand sanitizer or put it in your mouth or eyes. Hand sanitizer is flammable, so make sure to keep it clear of open flames and other heat sources.

If you or your child swallows an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or reacts to it, get medical help and/or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

Sizes

Both varieties of Purell are available in 8 oz. and 2 oz. sizes. The non-aloe variety is also available in a 1 oz. travel size. You’ll also find both products available in larger, industrial-use sizes. As of mid-May 2010, expect to pay well under $20 for an industrial-size 1,000 ml Purell hand sanitizer refill package. The 8 oz. and smaller sizes all retail for under $10.
