Keratin Hair Therapy

Overview

Keratin hair treatments, also called keratin hair therapy, are a popular service that many women pay for to improve the texture and look of their hair. Since hair is made out of the protein keratin, using keratin on the hair is not damaging like other chemical treatments can be. The purpose of keratin hair therapy is to add shine and decrease frizz while relaxing waves and curls. In fact, the Elayne James School of Greenville, Del. states that keratin treatments can reduce up to 95 percent of frizz in a woman’s hair.

Step 1

Research the cost and results of typical keratin hair therapy treatment in your area. There are several different brands of the keratin treatment solution, all of which use slightly different ingredients. The Washington Times states that keratin hair treatments range in price from about $400 to $600, as of 2010, yet some can cost under $200, depending on where they are done. Call up local salons to ask about their keratin hair treatments and compare the costs. You can even ask each salon for pictures of the results to see which one does better work.

Step 2

Book an appointment with a local hair stylist to get your keratin hair therapy treatment. Once you decide where the price is affordable and where the results seem good, you should make an appointment for a weekend or day when you have up to four hours to spare.

Step 3

Bring a book or magazine to your keratin hair therapy treatment, as it could take up to four hours to complete. The Washington Times reports the process of keratin hair therapy involves putting a solution on the hair, allowing it to soak in, blow drying it and then flat-ironing it to seal the solution in.

Step 4

Avoid washing your hair for three days after getting the keratin hair therapy treatment. The Elayne James School says washing the hair too soon after the treatment can reduce the length of time it stays in the hair and cause it to fade earlier. For the best results, avoid putting your hair in a ponytail or using any clips for the first three days after the treatment as well.

Step 5

Purchase a sulfate-free shampoo to maintain the results as long as possible. Washing the hair with a regular shampoo which contains sulfate can leach out the keratin in the hair, making it fade faster. Sulfate-free shampoos are available at salons and many drug stores.
