How to Inhibit Body Hair Growth

Overview

Hirsutism is a condition where women grow hair in areas of the body where women don’t typically grown hair such as the face, back and chest. According to the Mayo Clinic, 10 percent of women suffer from hirsutism. An excess of androgens, particularly testosterone, typically causes hirsutism. It can be embarrassing and inconvenient, there are a variety of treatments available.

Step 1

Take an oral contraceptive in the form of birth control pills or hormonal contraceptives which contain estrogen or progestin. A physician can advise on the appropriate form of treatment and dosage of hormones. Contraceptives as a treatment for hirsutism are most effective in women who aren’t looking to become pregnant. It may take up to one month of consistent treatment before experiencing any noticeable results.

Step 2

Take an anti-androgen medication. Anti-androgens work to block the androgens that cause the hair growth from attaching themselves to receptors in the body. Spironolactone, sold under the brand name Aldactone, is the most commonly prescribed anti-androgen. Similar to oral contraceptives, it can take four weeks or more to see any results.

Step 3

Use a prescription topical cream such as eflornithine. Eflornithine, sold under the brand name Vaniga, is a topical cream designed specifically to treat excessive facial hair in women. Apply the cream directly to the affected area on the face to slow hair growth. It can take up to two months to see any noticeable results from eflornithine. Side effects of eflornithine include tingling, stinging or a skin rash on the face. Patients report the return of the hair growth within eight weeks if this medication is discontinued.

Step 4

Maintain a healthy weight. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates that being overweight can be a contributing factor to hirsutism. Eating a balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, protein and whole grains is important for managing weight. Exercise is equally important in preventing excess weight gain.
