Dandruff is tied to several different scalp issues. Though dryness can cause dandruff, a bacterial trigger can also be to blame. Home remedies for dandruff generally employ the help of a high-acid ingredient or an herb with antibacterial properties to heal the condition. Unlike many popular medicated dandruff shampoos, these remedies usually get immediate results.
Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner
“Herbal Home Remedies” recommends an herbal apple cider vinegar rise for dandruff. This rinse eliminates bacteria and adds moisture to your scalp, and all of the herbs should be available at your local health food store. Combine 1 cup burdock, 1 cup peach tree leaves, 1 cup chamomile and 1/2 cup sage leaves. Pour 8 cups apple cider vinegar into a gallon-sized jar and stir in the herb mixture. Screw the lid on tightly and let the mixture marinate for two weeks. Strain and apply the conditioner to your clean, dry hair once in the morning and once in the evening. Allow the conditioner to dry on your scalp until the following day, then rinse it away with cool water only.
Lemon Juice Rinse
A lemon juice rinse strips away oil, styling product residue and other irritants that can cause dandruff. According to “Natural Beauty Secrets from India,” you should allow your hair to air-dry when using this treatment because lemon juice can add bleached highlights to your strands if it’s heated. Mix 8 oz. warm water with 3 tbsp. fresh-squeezed lemon juice and pour it over your head in place of plain water to rinse the shampoo from your hair.
Sesame Oil Conditioner
If you suspect your dandruff is related to dry scalp, a sesame oil conditioning treatment may be just the thing you need. “Alternative Cures: More Than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home Remedies” says massaging several teaspoons of oil into your scalp, wrapping your hair in a warm towel and leaving the oil in for 10 minutes can really hydrate your scalp. Rinse the oil away using your usual shampoo.
Parsley Rinse
According to “Herbal Home Remedies,” parsley contains antibacterial properties that can really ease some forms of dandruff. To make a parsley rinse, pour 2 cups boiling water over 1/2 cup clean, chopped fresh parsley. Let the mixture steep for 30 minutes, then pour it over your slightly damp, shampooed and rinsed hair. Massage the parsley rinse into your scalp, let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water.
