How to Use Red Vinegar for Dandruff

Overview

As the world gets more complicated, more people are searching for simple solutions to everyday problems. There are any number of medicated shampoos on the market to combat dandruff, but very few of us are familiar with the chemicals they contain, and even fewer have time to keep up on all of the contradictory claims regarding them. Red vinegar dandruff treatments are a healthy and natural alternative. It’s very simple to use red vinegar rinses, but it’s important to avoid letting the solution get into the eyes.

Step 1

Fill a plastic cup about one-quarter full of red vinegar. Add warm water until the cup is nearly full. If you want to make a larger batch, remember that you should use one part vinegar to three parts warm water for best results.

Step 2

In the shower, shampoo your hair as you normally would, concentrating on your scalp. Rinse out the shampoo.

Step 3

Pour the diluted red vinegar slowly over your scalp, massaging it in with your other hand as you pour it. Let the vinegar sit as you finish the rest of your shower: finish washing up, shave, exfoliate–do whatever you normally do.

Step 4

Apply a small amount of conditioner to the length and ends of your hair if you have color-treated, relaxed, very dry or thick hair. Do not put any conditioner on your scalp.

Step 5

Turn the water to a cooler temperature and rinse your hair thoroughly. Hot water stimulates oil secretions, and you don’t want that.

Step 6

Wrap your hair in an absorbent towel or turban. Do not twist, wring or rub your hair.

Step 7

Comb out any tangles with a wide-toothed comb. Do not tug or pull at them; just work them out gently.

Step 8

Let your hair dry naturally. The heat of a blow-dryer can stimulate your scalp to produce more oil. Letting your hair air-dry will also help keep the red vinegar from releasing its strong fragrance.

Step 9

Fill a clean spray bottle with one-half red vinegar and one-half warm water. Thoroughly spray your scalp with the solution and then massage it into your scalp. Wrap your head in a sleep turban or scarf and let the diluted red vinegar soak in over night.
