What Are the Treatments for Dark Eyes?

Dark circles under the eyes and even dark shadows around the eyelids are fairly common for women and men, especially those who are fatigued or stressed. Though they are not usually dangerous, darkness around the eyes is not attractive. In fact, under-eye circles can make a person look sleepy or sad. The Mayo Clinic states that dark circles under the eyes are usually caused by a lack of sleep. They can be treated quickly with the help of a few tips and techniques.

Laser Treatments

According to Valerie Monroe, the beauty director for The Oprah Magazine, laser treatments done in doctor’s offices or dermatology offices can lighten up the dark color around the eyes by altering the pigment in the skin. These treatments can produce long-lasting results. Laser treatments cost between $100 and $600 per treatment, Monroe said in 2006, but when done in a series of treatments, can drastically reduce darkness near the eyes.

Topical Creams

Some people have excess pigment in their skin, making a dark color under and around their eyes. Monroe states that topical creams such as rentinol can lighten the delicate skin around the eyes. Such creams are available by prescription, which can be written by your dermatologist.

Cool Compress

The Mayo Clinic states that cold compresses reduce darkness and puffiness so that the eye area looks brighter and healthier. Place the compress on top of closed eyes and press it gently. If you don’t have a cool compress, try wrapping a bag of frozen peas in a few washcloths and placing them on your eyes for a few minutes when you first wake in the morning.

Chemical Peels

Another way to remove dark color near the eyes is a chemical peel. Chemical peels use a strong acid, usually salicylic or glycolic acid, to gently strip off the top layer of your skin. What’s left after the treatment is healthier, brighter new skin, leaving you looking rested and more youthful. Chemical peels are usually not covered by insurance and can be painful. Because of risks associated with chemical peels, let only a licensed health care practitioner do one on your skin.
