How to Treat Dry, Damaged Hair With Household Items

Overview

When hair is healthy, it looks great — shiny, smooth and full of body. When hair is dry and damaged, though, it looks unhealthy, with dry, flyaway ends and no shine. Just as healthy, bouncy hair can make you feel great about yourself, damaged, unhealthy hair can make your self-confidence take a nosedive. But take heart — with some household items you can take care of that dry, damaged hair and feel the bounce in your hair and your step once again.

Step 1

Mix a little baking soda into your regular-sized dollop of shampoo. Just a teaspoon or so will help your regular shampoo act as a clarifying shampoo, removing any buildup in your hair and leaving it refreshed and ready for further treatments. Don’t do this step more than once a month to dry, damaged hair. If you don’t accumulate a lot of styling product buildup on your hair, you may just need to do it once every two or three months to give yourself a clean slate.

Step 2

Rub mayonnaise through your hair as a conditioner. Use the same amount as you would of your normal conditioner, and coat your hair with it. Leave it in for 10 minutes and an hour, depending on how dry your hair is. Rinse it out thoroughly.

Step 3

Pour beer into a pump bottle and spray it onto damp hair before drying and styling. The proteins in the malt are good for the hair; the beer coats the hair strands, making the style hold, but also makes hair look shiny and healthy.

Step 4

Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet. The household items you put into your body are just as important as the ones you put on your hair. Hydration is as important to your hair as it is to the rest of your body. Foods rich in “good” fats, such as salmon, nuts and avocados, help keep hair healthy.
