How to Treat Dark Under Eye Circles

Overview

The eyes are said to be the “windows of the soul.” Unfortunately, the wonder of our eyes can be significantly diminished by the presence of dark circles under them. These unsightly areas can be caused by heredity, lack of sleep, pollutants and allergies. Eliminating or masking these dark under eye circles requires a little skill and some preventative actions.

Step 1

Treat dark circles with compresses of fresh cucumber slices, fig pieces or a paste of powered almond and milk. Lie down, place the compress over both eyes and rest for 15 minutes in a dark, cool room. These products contain acid and foilates which aid in closing pores and thereby tightening the skin. These compresses also provide moisture to “plump” up the skin.

Step 2

Apply commercial creams containing retinol A to the skin under your eyes. Test a small area first to make sure you have no adverse reaction to the product. Retinol works by stimulating cell production from under the upper layer of skin so that a new fresh layer replaces the old.

Step 3

Wear sunglasses to help protect your eyes from the ravages of the sun. Choose glasses which block solar rays as much as possible.

Step 4

Eat lots of fresh foods high in vitamin K to treat dark eye circles. Vitamin K helps to rebuild the vascular walls of the blood vessels in the area, according to the Skin Care Resource Center. These foods include all types of greens including collards and kale, peas, broccoli and rhubarb.

Step 5

Hydrate yourself and your skin with 10 glasses of water daily. Space the liquid out throughout the morning and evening. In time the extra liquid will help plump up your skin including under your eyes and leave it smooth and refreshed looking. Disabled World recommends this water regimen.

Step 6

Combat fatigue if this is one of the causes of your dark circles. Say “no” to projects which may overwhelm your schedule. Take a few minutes each day to relax in a warm bath or read something light. Indulge in a nap on the weekends. Develop a relaxing nighttime routine in which you go to bed relaxed and with a non-cluttered mind; turn off the television and use white noise or a soothing nature sound recording if you need to block sounds from the city. See your physician for help if you suffer from insomnia or suspect any other sleep disorder.

Step 7

Freeze a specially designed face mask to wear at night. The intense cold will help fight swelling that generally appears in the morning.
