Overview
Acne is a common condition that affects millions of Americans. While it is most common for teenagers and women facing hormonal changes, anyone of any age group can experience acne. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common causes of acne are the bacterium P. acnes on the skin, and an overproduction of oil, which can clog pores. Acne can be treated in a variety of ways, from over the counter creams and washes to prescription pills. Another option is to get acne-fighting treatments in a spa or salon.
Step 1
Try a microdermabrasion from your favorite day spa or salon to help fight acne. The Mayo Clinic explains that a microdermabrasion is a treatment where a rotating device polishes off the top layer of skin with a diamond tip or other abrasive material. While this may sound painful, the pain is negligible to most people. The benefit of microdermabrasions is that they remove dead skin cells that could be clogging up the pores. They also reduce scarring and leave skin looking healthier and new.
Step 2
Get regular acne-clearing facials at least once a month. Many spas and salons offer acne-clearing facials that use ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to dry up pimples and unclog pores. Sonya Dakar, skin care consultant for many celebrities in Hollywood, states on her website that special acne-treating facials can dry up pimples, help to prevent new pimples from forming and also reduce the appearance of scars caused by acne. In between getting regular acne-treating facials, she recommends not touching your skin or picking at pimples to avoid spreading bacteria and making acne worse. Acne-clearing facials can be as cheap as $50, or as expensive as $100, depending on your spa or salon. They are usually cheaper if you buy a series of facials, such as six treatments in one package.
Step 3
Undergo laser light therapy treatments. Laser treatments are thought to work by damaging oil glands in the skin so that less oil is produced, states the Mayo Clinic. Laser treatments performed a few times per year can help to reduce acne inflammation and decrease the frequency of breakouts. Laser light therapy treatments are fairly expensive, and can run upwards of $100 per treatment.
