Overview
Skin is one of the largest organs of the human body. It is important to take care of it to prevent damage and disease. Skin care can includes a broad spectrum of coverage ranging from facial care and treatments to problem areas that occur throughout the body. The skin not only protects all of our internal organs, it also can be a signal tool when the body is fighting off disease or illness.
Cleansing
One of the most important things you can do every day to keep your skin healthy is to clean it. Skin is generally washed daily in the shower or bath. This wipes away oils, dirt and odor that accumulates. The face is often given special treatment because it is a direct reflection of our appearance. Wrinkles, lines and acne can easily form, and most people want to get rid of them as soon as possible. Skin Care Guide suggests that products containing alpha hydroxic acids will help smooth out wrinkles and give skin a rejuvenated appearance.
Sun Protection
Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays will prevent skin damage. Damage caused by UV rays can cause skin dryness, premature aging, wrinkles, lines and skin cancer. The Mayo Clinic says that excessive sun damage increases the production of melanocytes, causing an uneven skin tone or pigmentation in your skin. Caring for your skin after its been damaged can include chemical peels, botox, skin fillers, laser surgery and Tazarotene treatments.
Itching
If you have mild to excessive itching, it is important to care for your skin. Medline Plus states that itching, or pruritus, can be caused by a number of things, such as a rash, parasites, dermatitis, medical or allergic reaction, eczema or dry skin. To remedy most itching, cleansing the area is first recommended. A cold compress, warm oatmeal bath or anti-itch creams and lotions can also help sooth itchy skin. If your itching is caused from a parasite such as scabies or an allergic reaction, prompt medical attention is required.
Scarring
Many people worry about scarring, especially on their face or other visible areas of the body. Scarring is noticeable whether it was caused from a puncture, injury or burn. Beginners Guide states that scars form when there is excessive damage to the dermis, one of the deepest layers of the skin. New collagen fibers form in this area, creating new texture and skin quality that is noticeably different than the surrounding tissue. Scarring can be reduced through skin grafts, surgery and over-the-counter medicated creams.
Appearance
Changes in skin appearance are important to acknowledge at any age. Any significant change could be a signal that there is an underlying medical condition. Liver problems can show up by making color changes in the skin. Skin that has a yellow tint to it can be a result of jaundice. Chicken pox, measles and fifths disease all have visible redness and rashes that appear on the skin when the viruses are active. Melanoma.com states that a new mole or change in size of shape of an existing mole could be a sign of skin cancer such as melanoma.
