Overview
Puffiness under the eyes has a variety of causes, but they usually are not serious, according to the Mayo Clinic. Puffy eyes might be a result of fluid retention, which might be caused by lack of sleep, high sodium levels, diet or allergies. Otherwise, puffy eyes are caused by sagging skin, which can be caused by age or heredity. Puffy eyes because of fluid retention can be minimized naturally, but puffy eyes caused by sagging skin requires a surgical procedure such as eyelid surgery.
Step 1
Apply a cold compress under the eyes. Put a gel eye mask in the freezer, or use a washcloth rinsed in cold water for several minutes to help reduce puffiness.
Step 2
Prop your head up with an extra pillow, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Elevating the head will help drain the fluid that has accumulated underneath the eyes.
Step 3
Place two black teabags rinsed in cold water over the eyes, suggests Mary Stefanyszyn, M.D., associate surgeon in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Leave the teabags on for 15 minutes to tighten the skin and reduce swelling.
Step 4
Sleep more. The Mayo Clinic says that most people need between seven and eight hours a night. Getting more sleep will keep fluid from collecting underneath the eyes.
Step 5
Stay away from allergens. Exposure to allergens trigger a histamine release in the body, which might cause swelling underneath the eyes. Stay away from foods and environments you know you are allergic to.
