Overview
As you age, your skin loses its elasticity, and it is natural to develop fine lines and wrinkles. You are likely to notice fine lines that first appear around your eyes and at the corners of your mouth. Protecting your skin from damage can help slow down the development of wrinkles. Always wear sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher when outdoors and avoid smoking to prevent wrinkles. When wrinkles do appear, you’ll have several treatment options open to you.
Step 1
Ask your doctor for a prescription for a topical retinoid. A derivative of vitamin A, a topical retinoid is a less-invasive way to get rid of fine lines. Tretinoin is an example of a prescription retinoid that can be applied daily to fade skin imperfections. Dryness, redness and sun sensitivity are common side effects of retinoids.
Step 2
Set up a consultation with a plastic surgeon or dermatologist to go over treatment options for wrinkles and fine lines. Fillers, like Botox and collagen, can be injected into the face to temporarily get rid of wrinkles. With laser therapy, the skin is heated up to encourage new collagen and elastin growth. If you opt for dermabrasion, a rotating brush planes the skin to remove the top layers. Multiple treatments may be required for each procedure to maintain results.
Step 3
Undergo surgery to remove fine lines and wrinkles. During a facelift, excess fat and skin are removed from the face and the muscles are tightened to smooth out the skin. Bruising, inflammation and a chance of infection are common side effects of a facelift. Results last an average of 10 years.
