How to Get Rid of Facial Age Spots

Overview

Age spots, also called liver spots, are a type of skin discoloration. They have numerous causes, the two most common ones being prolonged sun exposure and the natural aging process. Age spots can appear anywhere on your body, but are more common in sun-exposed areas such as your forearms, forehead, shoulders, hands and face. Since these skin marks are permanent and can affect the appearance of your skin, you may want to take measure to eliminate them.

Step 1

Apply a high quality over-the-counter bleaching serum or cream to get rid of facial age spots. Make sure to look for a product that contains hydroquinone, the active ingredient which inhibits the production of skin pigments (melanin). Make sure to read and follow the instructions in the package before applying to face.

Step 2

Get laser therapy to remove the age spots on your face. Laser therapy works by dissolving the dark pigments called melanocytes which give age spots their color. After the procedure, the age spots will fade over time. Laser therapy is usually performed by a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist.

Step 3

Get dermabrasion to eliminate facial age spots. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon uses a sterile rotating brush to remove the top layer of your skin (epidermis). A new layer of skin cells will grow in its place after the procedure. Scabs will form temporarily during the healing process. They will dissolve in about three to four weeks.

Step 4

Consult a cosmetic surgeon and undergo cryotherapy (freezing). This technique works by dissolving dark pigments called melanocytes in age spots with liquid nitrogen, a freezing chemical. The age spots on your face will lighten during the healing process.
