How to Repair a Cut in My Goalie Pads

Overview

Goalie pads are arguably the most important piece of a hockey goaltender’s equipment. They protect the goalie from being injured from pucks, sticks, skates and other players. They also help stop the puck. Goalie pads can easily rip, however, since pucks often hit them at over 100 mph. Repairing goalie pads yourself can save you hundreds of dollars.

Step 1

Examine the goalie pads and determine what the damage is. If the cut on the pad is less than four inches long and fairly shallow, you should be able to fix it on your own. If it is larger than four inches or particularly deep, bring the pads to your trainer or a professional.

Step 2

Determine whether the stuffing inside the pads has moved around. If it has, use your fingers to move the stuffing back into place. If the stuffing is not moved back to its original position, your safety may be compromised.

Step 3

Sew your pads back together using a needle and strong thread. The more stitches you use, the stronger the repair will be. Pulling the thread through the pad will prove to be fairly challenging, but persistence is the key to managing this step. Continue sewing the pad until you are satisfied with the repair.

Step 4

Apply nail polish remover on any small tears or holes that are too small to sew. This will restore the health of the pads and keep them together a little longer. This is not a long-term solution. It is a quick fix that will help in an immediate situation.
