Bags underneath the eyes are caused by fluid retention or sagging skin and fat underneath the eyes, states Columbia University’s Health Services. You may notice a change in the puffiness underneath your eyes after drinking caffeinated begerages, eating salty foods, not getting enough sleep or drinking alcohol. In most cases, swollen, puffy eyes do not require medical attention and are not serious. If your puffy eyes are accompanied by any other symptoms, however, contact a doctor.
Step 1
Sit up while applying a cold compress, recommends Columbia’s Health Services. Place a handful of ice in the center of a washcloth. Bundle the ice up and apply it to the skin underneath the eyes for several minutes.
Step 2
Prop up your head with an additional pillow at night, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated will help fluid drain out of the face and underneath the eyes.
Step 3
Cut sodium, alcohol and caffeine out of the diet. Avoid salty snacks, sodas, coffee, canned vegetables and canned soups, and keep alcoholic beverages to a minimum.
Step 4
Take an antihistamine to help reduce puffy eyes due to allergies. When histamines are released in the body, your eyes may become swollen, red and itchy. To permanently relieve puffy eyes due to allergies, stay away from allergens.
