Overview
Hair loss along the hairline is typically associated with pattern baldness in men. Also referred to as androgenetic alopecia, it’s a condition that starts slowly with hair loss at the hair line and crown of the head. The American Hair Loss Association only offers two medications that can effectively slow hair loss along the hairline and even encourage the regrowth of lost hair.
Step 1
Talk to a dermatologist. To properly treat your hair loss at the hairline, a diagnosis from a trained dermatologist is often necessary. Medical professionals can assess the rate and pattern of hair loss to determine whether or not you’re suffering from androgenetic alopecia and which form of treatment is best for you.
Step 2
Use over-the-counter minoxidil. Sold under a variety of different brand names, this topical medication contains a 2-percent concentration of minoxidil. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, men can stop hair fall and stimulate the regrowth of some hair along the hairline by applying the medication twice a day. The reason why this drug works in these ways is still unknown, explains the Mayo Clinic, but it usually takes approximately three months to provide results.
Step 3
Try prescription minoxidil. Much like the OTC version, prescription minoxidil can stop hair fall and stimulate the regrowth of hair at the hairline in about three month’s time. But instead of a 2-percent concentration, the prescription strength is made with a 5-percent solution, notes the Mayo Clinic. The higher concentration may make this topical solution more effective in treating hair loss.
Step 4
Take finasteride. The American Hair Loss Association recommends this prescription medication over all others. Finasteride (brand name Propecia) treats the cause of the hair loss by affecting the production of DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. DHT is an androgen known to miniaturize the hair follicles, causing them to no longer produce hair. Daily use of finasteride lowers DHT levels, and thereby stops hairs loss and can promote the regrowth of hair.
