Overview
Although hair loss is most often associated with men, approximately 40 percent of hair loss sufferers are women, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Causes of hair loss in women include trauma, hormonal changes, malnutrition, extreme stress and certain medical conditions. Although not all types of hair loss can be prevented, there are some certain precautions you can take to reduce the amount of hair you lose. Speak to your doctor if you experience hair loss that you expect may be caused by a medical problem.
Step 1
Eat a well-balanced diet. Nutritional deficiencies, such as anemia, can cause hair loss in women according to the American Hair Loss Association. Eat a diet high in protein, iron, vitamin E, B vitamins, vitamin C and calcium. Food sources for these nutrients include seafood, green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, poultry and milk.
Step 2
Apply an over-the-counter topical minoxidil solution. The Mayo Clinic website lists minoxidil as one of its prevention methods for hair loss. Apply the minoxidil directly to the scalp twice a day. Brands, such as Rogaine, have formulations specifically for women.
Step 3
Wear your hair loose. Restrictive styles have the ability to damage the hair follicles and lead to hair loss. Avoid putting your hair in buns, ponytails, cornrows and braids.
Step 4
Limit the use of thermal styling tools. Exposing your hair to heat can damage it and lead to hair loss. Allow the hair to air dry as often as possible instead of blow drying. Try not to use heated tools often, such as straighteners, curling irons, hot rollers and crimpers.
Step 5
Keep stress under control. Participate in stress busting activities, such as yoga, deep breathing and meditation. Never handle stress by pulling out the hair or twisting it excessively. This can damage the follicles and affect regrowth.
