Overview
When pockets of fat collect under the surface of the skin, it can lead to what is known as cellulite. For most people, cellulite develops along the thighs, buttocks and hips, resulting in a dimpling or rippling appearance to the skin. Although it’s difficult to get rid of cellulite once it forms, it isn’t impossible.
Step 1
Lose excess pounds. The Mayo Clinic recommends overall weight loss to reduce the appearance of cellulite. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean meats coupled with regular exercise can help you shed pounds. Carrying less weight lessens the dimpling on the skin.
Step 2
Tone your muscles. By toning and strengthening the muscles of your legs and buttocks, you can also improve the appearance of your skin. Stair climbing, weightlifting, biking, running and swimming are all activities that isolate the muscles of the legs and buttock. Strength training combined with aerobic exercise is “the best weapon against cellulite,” according to the Nemours Foundation. As you tone and strengthen this area, the dimpling may lessen to the point where you no longer see it on your skin.
Step 3
Get a deep tissue massage. The idea behind this treatment is that the action of the massage increases blood flow, which can help reduce toxins and excess fluid that may be contributing to the formation of cellulite, notes the Mayo Clinic. While people often see an improvement in dimpled skin, regular sessions are necessary to maintain results.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water to help prevent cellulite. The National Institutes of Health recommend approximately 64 oz. of water a day in conjunction with a well-balanced diet.
Step 5
Avoid “yo-yo” dieting. The continuous loss and gain of weight can contribute to cellulite development. Maintain a healthy diet and healthy weight to prevent dimpled skin from getting worse.
