Natural Remedies for Dry Cracked Skin

Skin that looses moisture due to sun damage, dry air, cold weather, hot water or harsh soaps and detergents may look ashy and begin to crack. If your doctor determines that your dry skin is not due to any type of serious illness, he may recommend you treat your dry skin symptoms with at-home remedies.

Humidifier

Using a humidifier at night can help reduce the effects of dry skin, suggests the Mayo Clinic. A humidifier is filled with water, and when it is turned on, releases water vapor into the air. The water vapor is absorbed into the skin cells, moisturizing and smoothing the skin. A humidifier can release bacteria into the air if it is not cleaned properly. Clean the humidifier out with vinegar twice a week to prevent bacteria growth.

Cool Water

Bathing and showering with cool water instead of hot or scalding water will help retain moisture in the skin cells and keep skin from drying out. Only take a shower or bath when necessary, and if possible, do not bathe every day. When you bathe, the natural oils are stripped from your skin, contributing to the dryness.

Mild Soaps

Harsh soaps and clothing detergents can cause skin to crack and become dry, particularly if the soap contains a chemical or ingredient to which you are allergic. Use only unscented detergents, and soaps formulated for sensitive skin.

Cotton

Clothing that is made of synthetic fibers, like polyester, can be irritating to skin, making dry skin even worse. Additionally, itchy fabrics like wool can wreak havoc on dry skin, making it even drier. Wear loose clothing made of natural fibers, like 100 percent cotton. Cotton will allow your skin to breathe, reducing skin irritation.

Petroleum Jelly

Use petroleum jelly to moisturize dry, cracked skin, recommends Howard Donsky, M.D., staff dermatologist at Toronto General Hospital. Slather a liberal amount of petroleum jelly on the skin immediately after showering to help lock in moisture. Instead of drying skin off completely, pat your skin dry with a towel and leave some moisture on the skin. Moisturizing damp skin will help the cells retain more moisture throughout the day.
