Ingrown Toenails: The Home Remedy

Overview

An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail grows into the skin at the edges of your toe. In the beginning stages of an ingrown toenail, the area might appear irritated and swollen. As it becomes infected, increased swelling and pain is likely to occur. Ingrown toenails are most often caused by improper toenail trimming, injury and tight shoes. Although you can treat the condition at home, contact your doctor if you suspect an infection.

Step 1

Fill a tub with warm water. Soak the affected foot in the water for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Repeat this process a minimum of four times a day. Dry the foot after soaking and keep it dry the rest of the day.

Step 2

Gently lift the edge of the nail out of the embedded position and place either cotton or floss between the nail and the skin. This packing can help the nail grow out and prevent it from growing deeper into the skin. Change it daily.

Step 3

Smooth a small amount of over-the-counter antibiotic topical ointment on the affected area. Cover the toe with gauze and secure with medical tape. Repeat application daily until the swelling subsides.

Step 4

Wait for the toenail to grow out. The toenail should be past the edge of the toe before you trim it. Use a sharpened nail trimmer to cut the nail in a clean and straight line. When the edges are tapered, you increase your chances of a recurrence of an ingrown toenail.
