How to Improve Brittle Breaking Hair

Overview

People are attracted to beautiful, well-cared-for locks. Some have gorgeous heads of hair naturally, but not everyone is blessed with radiant tresses. Many are afflicted with brittle breaking hair that is difficult to manage. Proper attention, however, can improve difficult or damaged hair by strengthening it. You can have the healthy hair you desire with the right care.

Step 1

Treat your hair gently. Wet hair is especially prone to breakage so pat dry after shampooing with a towel instead of using heat on it. If you must use a blow dryer, set it on its lowest setting.

Step 2

Improve your hair with regular cuts and trims. The ends of the hair are likely to become damaged first so attend to them frequently. Consult with your hairdresser on how short to have cuts when your hair is damaged high up the shaft. Don’t worry—it’ll grow back.

Step 3

Choose a mild shampoo formulated for dry hair. Wash with warm water and rinse well with cool water after each application. Skip at least two days between washing as dry hair will respond better to less cleansing.

Step 4

Use a conditioner specially formulated for dry brittle hair. You should condition no more than once a week. You can use a deep conditioner once a month.

Step 5

Protect your hair from chlorinated pools. Wet your hair with tap water, apply a tiny bit of conditioner which you work through your hair and put on a swim cap before you enter the pool.

Step 6

Wear a hat when you will be outside for long periods on sunny days. This will help protect your already fragile hair from the drying and damaging effects of solar rays.

Step 7

Go easy on styling products, even after you improve the texture and strength of your hair. Most commercial products contain harsh chemicals which can destroy your hair over time.

Step 8

Stay away from perms, relaxers and hair coloring when you are seeking to improve brittle dry locks. Go to a professional if you decide to have one of these procedures rather than attempting it at home.
