Overview
If your hair looks dull, drab and lifeless, you can use items from around the house to add moisture and volume. Hair that is exposed to styling products, heat from blow drying and straightening, and repetitive perming or coloring can become limp and dry, with a straw-like consistency. Hair that is damaged may become tangled more easily and break off while brushing or styling it. Undo some of the damage you’ve done on your hair by adding moisture to make your hair soft, shiny and more manageable.
Step 1
Apply mayonnaise to the hair to condition and moisturize dry hair, recommends Steven Docherty, senior art director at Vidal Sassoon Salon in New York City. Run a generous amount of store-bought mayonnaise into your hair, then place a shower cap over your head. Leave the mayonnaise in your hair for up to an hour, recommends Docherty.
Step 2
Mash together an avocado, a banana, an egg and 2 tbsp. olive oil in a bowl. Beat until smooth, then apply the mixture to the hair, recommends Helen Ambrosen in “Cosmopolitan” magazine. Leave the mixture on for 10 minutes, then rinse out in the shower. Shampoo and condition as usual.
Step 3
Spray beer on your hair instead of hairspray, recommends Docherty. Beer will hold your hair in place, but is not as damaging as store-bought hairspray or gel. Spritz the beer in your hair, then scrunch the strands with your fingers to add body and waves.
Step 4
Create a yogurt mask, recommends Kori Ellis of “SheKnows.com.” Beat one egg white with a whisk until foamy, then add 1/4 cup mayonnaise and 1/4 cup yogurt. Cover your head with plastic wrap, then sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the hair out with cold water, then wash with a mild shampoo and conditioner.
Step 5
Curl your hair the night before instead of using a curling iron or hot rollers. Putting your hair in foam rollers while it is still wet, then waiting for your hair to dry overnight before taking the rollers out is not damaging to your hair.
