Homemade Deep Conditioner for Dry Hair

Overview

Avocados are naturally rich in hair-conditioning humectants, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, so they are ideal ingredient for a deep conditioner to use on your hair once a week. An avocado hair conditioner can replenish lost moisture that makes your hair look dry and damaged after coloring or spending a lot of time in the sun. Avocado-derived conditioners are endorsed by the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection as a green-friendly alternative to chemical conditioning products. Avocado deep conditioners are easy to put together and should always be used fresh, as soon as you mix them.

Step 1

Choose a moderately ripe avocado that depresses a little when you push your thumb into the skin. Peel the avocado by slicing it in half around the pit and removing the pit with a knife. Scoop out the soft flesh from the skin and place it in a bowl. Discard the skin and pit.

Step 2

Add 8 ounces of real mayonnaise to the avocado in the bowl, says PioneerThinking.com. Mix well until it forms a smooth, creamy paste.

Step 3

Bring the mixture into the bathroom with you, and apply the paste to your dry hair with your hands. Make sure that you saturate every strand. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the deep conditioner evenly through your hair. Pile your hair loosely on top of your head and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap. Cover your entire head with a towel to lock in moisture.

Step 4

Turn on your shower so that your bathroom gets hot and steamy. The heat will help the avocado deep conditioner penetrate your hair for even better conditioning. If you don’t want to waste the water, try sitting in the sun of relaxing in the warmest room in your home. Keep the deep conditioner on your hair for at least 30 minutes before rinsing out with cool water. Use a mild shampoo if necessary to remove oily residue.
