Overview
According to Dr. Eric F. Bernstein, an associate professor at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, even though existing acne scars cannot get worse, not treating an active case of acne may lead to more scarring. When you scratch acne pimples, you damage skin tissue, which can result in permanent scarring. While traditional medicine offers a range of treatments for removing acne scars, home remedies are less expensive and have fewer side effects. Home treatments help to diminish mild to moderate acne scars by improving skin tone and texture.
Step 1
Use egg whites as a facial mask. Leave on for about 20 to 30 minutes or overnight before washing off. Egg whites make acne scars less visible by tightening the pores in your face. Orange peel is another face mask you can use to get smoother looking skin. Make a paste by grinding the peel of one orange and then adding water.
Step 2
Mix cucumber and tomato juices together and apply directly to acne scars. This helps tighten pores, giving your face a more even appearance. For a quick fix, apply an ice pack to acne scars. The treatment only tightens pores temporarily, but makes acne scars less visible for a short time when you are trying to look your best
Step 3
Grind one tablespoon of lentils with a teaspoon of milk. Add a pinch of camphor and a couple of drops of hot, fresh ghee. Mix well before applying to scarred areas. Allow paste to dry and then rub off gently. Wash you face with warm water. Lentils are a good dietary source of the mineral zinc, known for its antioxidant properties, and role in collagen production and skin healing. Ghee, which is made from butter, has long been used as an alternative treatment for healing wounds.
Step 4
Lighten acne scars by applying fresh lemon juice with a cotton ball. Give your skin time to absorb the juice and then rinse your face with cold water to tighten pores.
Step 5
Include foods rich in vitamin E in your diet, as consuming adequate amounts of this essential nutrient can help speed the skin healing. Contrary to previous belief that topical application of vitamin E fades minor acne scars over time, a study published in “Dermatologic Surgery” reports that topical vitamin E can actually make scars look worse. However, the antioxidant properties of vitamin E may help to protect skin cells from damage caused by free radicals.
