Heartburn, as the name implies, is a burning sensation in your chest that typically occurs after eating. Also called indigestion, heartburn is caused by stomach acid that travels up into your esophagus. Certain foods and beverages, including tomato sauce, black pepper, alcohol and caffeine, can cause heartburn. Although over-the-counter antacids are commonly taken to relieve the symptoms of indigestion, baking soda may also be an effective heartburn treatment.
Neutralizer
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, can alleviate heartburn and upset stomach, because of its neutralizing effects on stomach acid, according to the Mayo Clinic. Mix 1/2 tsp. of baking soda in a glass of water every couple of hours. Drink the powder after it has completely dissolved. The exact dosage of baking soda will vary from person to person.
Considerations
Baking soda for the treatment of heartburn should be not be taken in excessive amounts. The makers of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda recommend limiting your intake to seven ½ tsp. of baking soda in a 24-hour period. If you are over age 60, the maximum dosage should not exceed three ½ tsp. You should not take the maximum dosage for more than two consecutive weeks.
Children & Baking Soda
Do not give an antacid to children under age 6 unless prescribed by their doctor, according to the Mayo Clinic. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 may consume ¼ to ½ tsp. of baking soda in a glass of cold water after eating.
The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) recommends that children stop eating two to three hours before bedtime to help prevent indigestion.
Restrictions & Side Effects
If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, you should not use baking soda to treat heartburn unless recommended by a doctor. If you are unable to take baking soda, lifestyle considerations such as eating smaller, frequent meals and wearing clothes that are loose fitting may help minimize the symptoms of indigestion.
Consult your doctor before taking baking soda if you are currently taking any prescription medications.
Possible side effects of baking soda include loss of appetite, headache, nausea and unpleasant taste.
