Coughing may occur due to the flu, a cold or a respiratory infection, like bronchitis or pneumonia. Coughing may also be caused by allergies, smoking, lung cancer or emphysema. If your doctor approves it, you can use home remedies to make breathing easier and reduce the severity of your cough.
Honey
Honey may help reduce coughing as effectively as over-the-counter (OTC) cough suppressants, like dextromethorphan, says the Mayo Clinic. Take 2 tbsp. of honey at bedtime, or mix 2 tbsp. of honey with hot water and lemon to taste. Sip the mixture slowly and inhale the steam from the cup to help loosen phlegm in the chest. Drink the mixture as necessary throughout the day to help suppress coughing and soothe a raw, irritated throat.
Water Vapor
Water vapor may help soothe a cough, says Sally Wenzel, M.D., associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Run a vaporizer or humidifier overnight to loosen congestion in the chest and soothe your throat. Clean the humidifier several times a week to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. If you don’t have a humidifier, fill the bathtub with warm water or run the shower for several minutes. Sit in the bathroom with the door shut and slowly inhale and exhale the steam. Do not inhale steam in a moldy bathroom.
Lozenges
Suck on a throat lozenge to help moisten the vocal folds and soothe a cough, says the Mayo Clinic. Lozenges that contain mint or menthol may help cool and soothe the airways. Sucking on a hard candy or lozenge may also help increase saliva, which coats and soothes the throat.
Liquids
Drinking liquids, particularly water, will help loosen mucus in the chest and nasal passages, says Wenzel. Drink water, diluted fruit juices and chicken soup throughout the day. Drink caffeinated beverages, alcohol and sugary sodas sparingly.
