Herbs Used for Hair Loss

Hair loss, or alopecia, is a condition that affects both men and women. It is caused by heredity, aging, testosterone, an underlying medical condition or severe emotional stress, according to the National Institutes of Health. You can stop or slow hair loss naturally with herbs that have been used for this purpose for centuries.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto, Serenoa repens, is a widely used herbal remedy for hair loss. In “The Green Pharmacy,” Dr. James A. Duke writes that this herb affects testosterone. Saw palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, a compound that causes hair loss by shrinking and eventually killing hair follicles. Saw palmetto is available in capsule and soft gel formulations. Take one 160 mg capsule each morning and every other evening.

Pygeum

Pygeum, Pygeum africanum, is another herb that can slow or stop hair loss, according to the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine. It also inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Pygeum is available in capsule form. Take 60 mg to 500 mg once a day.

Fenugreek

Dr. Pratima Raichur, a New York naturopathy practitioner, recommends using fenugreek, Trigonella foenum-graecum, to encourage hair growth. Stir 1/2 tsp. fenugreek powder in 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk and apply to your scalp. Cover with a plastic cap for 30 minutes and then rinse. Repeat this twice a week for two months.

Safflower

The essential oil of safflower, Carthamus tinctoriushas, is a traditional Chinese herbal treatment for hair loss, according to Dr. Duke. Applied topically, safflower oil nurtures hair growth by expanding blood vessels in the scalp. This increases blood flow, which delivers nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. Massage safflower oil into your scalp once a day.

Rosemary

Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, essential oil is a traditional herbal remedy for hair loss. In “Handbook of Herbs and Spices,” author K. V. Peter writes that it increases blood circulation in the scalp and stimulates the hair follicles. Rosemary oil can be used in formulation with other essential oils or alone in a carrier oil such as olive or jojoba oil. Peter suggests combining the essential oils of rosemary, thyme, lavender and cedar wood in grapeseed and jojoba carrier oils and massaging this into the scalp for seven months.
