How to Grow Strong & Thick Hair

Overview

If you have subjected your hair to damage, it may look dull, dry and lifeless. Coloring, styling, perming and blow drying can damage your hair, causing it to become brittle and break. Hair that is particularly damaged may feel sticky when it is wet, and dry more quickly after taking a shower. Restrengthen your hair by infusing it with moisture and keeping your hair coated with natural oils. As your hair regains moisture, it will become stronger and thicker.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair less often, recommends Thomas Goodman, Jr., M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. Shampooing hair can strip your hair of its natural oils, which can cause breakage. To keep your hair strong, shampoo your hair only a few times a week.

Step 2

Apply mayonnaise to your hair to add moisture. Spread store-bought mayonnaise on the hair, then wrap your hair up in an old towel. Leave the mayonnaise on the hair for up to an hour.

Step 3

Brush your hair with a boar bristle brush, recommends an article in “Marie Claire” magazine. Boar bristles work by distributing your hair’s natural oils from the roots to the ends.

Step 4

Protect your hair from the elements. Wind that whips your hair around or harsh sun that causes sun damage can make hair weaken and break. Wear a hat or bandanna on windy days, and protect hair from the sun by smoothing a thin layer of sunscreen over your hair.

Step 5

Condition your hair after shampooing. Conditioners rebuild the moisture and protein that is lost after shampooing. Leave conditioner in for three to five minutes, then rinse out.
