The Best Brands of Sunscreen

When looking for a sunscreen, the Mayo Clinic recommends purchasing one with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher. Also, try to avoid perfumes or ingredients that might irritate your body, especially if you have sensitive skin. Water-resistant products are recommended if you’re going to swim or if you tend to perspire heavily. A few brands produce numerous products that live up to these recommendations.

Neutrogena

Consumer Search lists Neutrogena as their top sunscreen. The Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock is given high ratings for its SPF (55) and for the fact that it doesn’t run into the user’s eyes or come off easily. Neutrogena produces other sunscreens at varying SPF levels so you can buy one that is ideal for your specific needs.

UV Natural

The Environmental Working Group gives a number of UV Natural products their highest recommendation based on effectiveness and the low health hazard posed by these products. They recommend UV Natural Sunscreen, UV Natural Sport Lip and UV Natural Spot Sunscreen, all of which have an SPF of 30.

Blue Lizard

A 2006 survey of dermatologists conducted at a meeting of the American Academy of Dermatologists found that Blue Lizard sunscreen is one of the top five most recommended brands. This company features a number of sunscreens, including a chemical-free version of its formula and a sunscreen designed especially for babies.

Coppertone

Slate.com found a number of Coppertone products to be the best working sunscreens on the market. If you’re going to be physically active in the sun, they have good things to say about Coppertone’s Sport Ultra Sweat Proof Lotion. This sunscreen, which is SPF 48, is designed to withstand the heavy perspiration associated with outdoor sport and activity.
