Folk Remedies for Warts

Warts are growths on the skin and are most often caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, according to the Mayo Clinic. Warts differ from moles and usually disappear by themselves, but visible warts can cause both embarrassment and annoyance. There are many kinds of warts that can appear on various parts of the body, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Warts can be contagious if the other person is susceptible to HPV, and can accidentally be spread to others.

Aloe Vera

The website Health911 says that soaking a piece of cotton in the gel of the aloe vera plant can help get rid of a bothersome wart. It recommends taping the soaked cotton ball over the wart and adding more aloe every several hours. Change the cotton every day and after a few days you should see the wart drying up. The website says the wart may completely vanish after a few weeks of this treatment.

Duct Tape

A study published in the Archive of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine in 2002, and reported by the National Institutes of Health, found that applying a piece of duct tape directly to the wart completely dissolved warts. The subjects were treated for up to two months with duct tape applied for six continuous days. The tape was removed and the wart was soaked in water and scrubbed with an emery board. The Institute of Health reported that 85 percent of the warts were dissolved using this treatment.

Aspirin

The website Health 911 suggests that a solution made up of one regular aspirin dissolved in a small amount of water can create a paste that is effective at treating warts. Apply the paste directly to the wart and cover it with an adhesive bandage. The Mayo Clinic doctors caution that the salicylic acid that is a major ingredient of aspirin can irritate the skin, and recommend talking to your doctor before trying this treatment.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Soak the wart in warm water for about 20 minutes to soften the wart. Dry the wart and use a cotton ball to apply apple cider vinegar to the wart. Leave the vinegar on the wart for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water, according to Health 911
