Kitchen Remedies for Treating Acne

Effective treatments for acne are as varied as the people using them. Some respond to over-the-counter (OTC) treatments, while others respond well to prescription medications. Unfortunately, these treatments are not effective for everybody and may be too harsh for some. Trying multiple acne treatments also becomes expensive when multiple treatments fail to work. Skip the chemicals and the price and give some kitchen remedies a try instead.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar may be highly effective at treating acne. This remedy kills bacteria, which is a leading cause of acne. Also, it effectively absorbs the excess oil that most people with acne-prone skin have. Mix three or four parts water with one part apple cider vinegar, according to Home Remedies Web. Apply this to the face using a clean cotton ball or pad and leave on for about 10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat this three times daily or as desired. For more severe or stubborn acne, leave the solution on overnight.

Garlic and White Vinegar

Garlic, white vinegar and rosehip seed oil combined make an effective acne-fighting solution. The garlic and vinegar have astringent and antiseptic effects, and the rosehip seed oil reduces redness and inflammation, according to Summer Rayne Oakes of Discovery’s Planet Green. Combine the juice of three garlic cloves with equal parts white vinegar and rosehip seed oil. Soak this up with a cotton ball or swab and apply directly to breakouts. Do not rinse the solution off, and reapply several times daily or after each face washing.

Honey

Honey contains powerful antimicrobial properties that help battle the bacteria that causes acne. It is also a good source of antioxidants, and its texture helps remove dirt and debris from pores. While many natural OTC acne products contain honey, it can also be used alone as a mask to fight blemishes. Organic or health food stores carry organic honey, which may be more effective at treating acne because more of the antimicrobial properties are preserved. To apply, spread the honey on your skin and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. Apply daily for the maximum benefit.
