Homeopathic Remedies for Leg Cramps

Leg cramps are painful muscle spasms. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, these spasms are caused when the muscle contracts without the person’s ability to control it. Leg cramps can be painful and interrupt your sleep, occur while exercising or just come on suddenly.

Stretching, Massage and Heat

Stretching and massaging is one quick remedy to treat leg cramps. Leg cramps often occur when exercising. When the cramp occurs, try rubbing the painful area and stretching the muscle to relieve the pain. Flex your foot up and down or walk around to try and stop the spasm. In addition, heat can also be helpful in treating leg cramps. Try using a heating pad on the affected area, or hop into a hot bath or shower and try massaging the leg.

Drink Fluids

According to the National Library of Medicine, one of the most common causes of leg cramps is dehydration. When a person sweats, they lose vital salt and minerals, which can lead to leg cramps. Drinking fluids is one way to diminish the pain and tightening from leg cramps. According to the National Library of Medicine, drinking sports drinks that replenish lost minerals or water with salt tablets is a way to ease cramping. When exercising or working outside in a hot environment, it is important to carry these fluids to use as needed.

Potassium

Another way to help relieve leg cramps is to eat plenty of potassium rich foods. Potassium is important because when there is too little potassium in the body, it can cause muscles to function improperly. According to Stanford University, eating foods high in potassium may ease nocturnal leg cramps. Some potassium sources include bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, oranges and grapefruit.
