Homeopathic Medicine for Influenza

Influenza is the name given to a number of virus strains. Flu sufferers may have many of the symptoms of a common cold, but with much more intensity. Fever, headaches, fatigue and muscle aches may all be present. Some strains affect the respiratory system, while others involve the digestive system. Homeopathic remedies are dilutions of plant substances that can be given with safety and efficacy to alleviate flu symptoms. Most can be found in both tablet and liquid form.

Aconitum Napellus

This homeopathic remedy is most effective when taken at the first sign of the flu. Symptoms may come on suddenly with great intensity, and may include fever with strong thirst, anxiety and constricted pupils. Fear and agitation may be present in individuals who need aconite. Children who will benefit from this remedy may be anxious and thirsty, with symptoms that worsen after midnight.

Allium Cepa

Allium cepa is indicated when there is a stinging, watery discharge from the eyes and nose. A lot of sneezing may also occur along with a throat tickle. These may also be signs of allergy.

Arsenicum Album

If the flu makes you feel chilly and fatigued, yet restless, arsenicum may be needed. Anxiety and thirst are also present when someone needs this remedy. When the flu is affecting the digestive system, nausea and vomiting along with diarrhea can occur. For the respiratory strain, a watery, runny nose with wheezing cough is common.

Belladonna

Belladonna may be indicated when intense symptoms come on suddenly. Sore throat, earache, swollen tonsils and glands, along with fever and headache may be present. According to Dr. Ellen Feingold, belladonna is a commonly used remedy for high fevers and may also help relieve a throbbing headache.

Eupatorium Perforliatum

This homeopathic remedy is helpful when severe muscle aches are present with a high fever, chills and exhaustion. According to Dr. Gary Null, eupatorium is useful for the flu that results in bone pain, especially in the legs. The person in need of this remedy may have leg or back pain that feels like the bones are near breaking. Heavy sensation in the head with eye pain may also indicate the use of this remedy.

Ferrum Phosphoricum

Called ferrum phos for short, this remedy is indicated when symptoms are mild and come on slowly. The early stages of the flu such as low-grade fever with general ill feeling respond well to this remedy. The eyes may be sensitive, thirst may be strong, and vomiting after eating may occur.

Nux Vomica

Nux vomica may be indicated by the presence of high fever with violent chills, nausea and stomach cramps, and possible diarrhea. For a respiratory strain, the nose may be stuffed at night, yet runny during the day. You may experience sensitivity to light, sounds, and odors when nux vomica is needed. Irritability is also common, and symptoms may become worse from exertion or exposure to cold.
