Aromatherapy & Stress

Overview

The fragrances of certain plants can bring on a calming effect when inhaled, which is why aromatherapy is often used as a method to relax a person’s state of mind. If you are looking for ways to help you cope better with stress, aromatherapy offers a natural method for relieving stress and anxiety. The method of delivery can be as simple as wetting a cotton swab with an essential oil and inhaling the fragrance.

How It Works

The Psychology Department at Vanderbilt University points out that the brain records aromas twice as fast as it registers pain signals. Because the sense of smell bypasses the blood brain barrier to the central nervous system, the olfactory system can send messages directly to the limbic area deep in the brain. This is the central command center for mood and emotions and is connected to the pituitary gland and hypothalamus where the hormones that control stress levels are released.

Essential Oils

The essences of geranium, chamomile and sweet marjoram can help to reduce stress in some individuals. Likewise, the scent of lavender works not only to relieve stress but also has a relaxing effect. Clary sage is another essential oil useful in promoting relaxation. Juniper berry is an essence that aids in reducing anxiety. These and other pleasing scents tend to have a calming effect on the mind and body. Some essential oils are also known for having therapeutic properties, which can help to relieve stress.

Relaxing Blends

In some cases, a combination of aromas may work better at relieving stress than relying on the smells of individual essential oils. If you are looking to relieve the aches and pains related to stress, mix 20 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops each of rosemary and black pepper oils and five drops each of peppermint and cypress oils. Combine all the ingredients in a bottle containing carrier oil, which is usually a vegetable oil used to dilute essential oils. Shake well. Mix another massage oil that helps to relieve mental exhaustion by adding 20 drops of geranium oil, 10 drops each of bergamot oil and ylang ylang oil and five drops each of frankincense and cedar wood oils to a bottle containing carrier oil.

Carrier Oils

Olive oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil and sweet almond oil are some of the most common carrier oils used to mix aromatherapy and massage oils. Carrier oils should be stored in dark glass bottles in a cool place away from light. Do not use mineral oil in aromatherapy, as it can clog pores and prevent the absorption of essential oils.

Characteristics of Essential Oils

Essential oils are liquids distilled from the aromatic elements of a botanical plant. Normally the oil comes from the leaves, bark, roots or flower petals of an herb or other tree or plant. Some are stored in the peel of a fruit. Essential oils have a concentrated aroma that evaporates in the air. Although the oils cannot go bad, they can oxidize and lose their therapeutic value over time.

Aromatherapy Candles

Scented candles are becoming more popular as a way to deliver the benefits of aromatherapy. In addition to the relaxing scents, which help to remove nervous tension, burning candles aids in creating a relaxing atmosphere. Soothing scents for aromatherapy candles for stress relief include cedar wood, rosewood, lavender, ginger and German chamomile.
